An Analysis of family cohesion, Family Adaptablility and Sick Role of the Patients Admitted in Rehabilitation Ward


Abstract
With the increasing nursing care demands for the patients with chronic diseases and physical disability, the specialty of rehabiliation nursing has been intorduced to Korea.
To support the nursing practice and research in Rehabilitation Ward, the data were collected from the patient who were admitted to the Rehabiliation Ward of Chungnam University. Hospital in Taejon with the structured questionnare and analyzed to evaluate status of family cohesion, family adaptability and sick role and their mutual correlation according to the various demographic characteristics.
For the Questionnare, Family Adaptability Cohesion Evaluation Scale ¥²(FACES¥²) were used and SPSS-X program, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe and correlation coefficient were used for statistical analysis
The results were as follows£º
1. Family of the rehabilitation patients showed higher family cohesion (30.216¡¾ 4.797) and adaptability (23.225¡¾ 44.6) than the usual family.
2. Six types among 16 in Circumplex Model of family models were noted, balanced pattern, mid pattern and extreme pattern were seen in 4.5£¥, 70.3£¥ and 25.2£¥ respectively. Interaction method for the extreme pattern family needs to be develped.
3. Among the demographic characteristics, married patients showed higher family cohesion than the others (F=3.16, p<.05)and the patients cared by spouse showed higher family adaptability than the other (F=6.17, p<.001).
Family adaptability was also different according to sex, (t=2.16, p<.05), marital status (F=4. 83, p<.001), family size (F=3.54, p<.001) and caregiver(F=6.17, p<.001).
4. Patient¢¥s behavioral expectation score showed near dependency and sick role than impaired role. Among the demographic characteristics, age(F=4.46, p<.05). mental status(F=3.52, p<.05), position in family(F=3.07, p<.05), care giver(F=4.82, p<.05) were the variable affecting the patient¢¥s behavioral expectations. Patient cared by their childern expected more dependency than those cared by their parents.
5. Sick role expectation according to the dyadic role relationsphip showed normal relationship with the medical team(2.98¡¾ .70), and near normal with family(2.76¡¾ .87), and near dependency to patient oneself(2.4¡¾ .91).
6. The higher the family cohesion, the higher the adaptability (r=.7255, p<.0001) and dependency (r=-.1558, p<.05).
